Belgium is the country with most festivals per person in the world. Dour Festival is known as one of the best festivals not only in Belgium, but all over Europe. The key to their success is a formidable line-up. Let us take a look at it.
On Thursday 12/07 our own Selah Sue will be performing in Last Arena. In very short time she has been invading Europe. Another act in the same place is Nero mixing d&b and dubstep. Melodic but worth checking it out. If you are more into techhouse than the place to be is Club Cirquit Marquee where Adam Beyer and Max Cooper will take place behind the desks. A concert you shouldn’t miss is Owiny Sigoma Band in Dance Hall. Very danceable music by these British and Kenyan artists who mix poppy beats with traditional instruments. And end up playing afrobeat. In few words: the place to get you in the right mood.
Brussels is strongly represented at this edition of Dour. One of the bands coming from Brusselsand and a must see is The Peas Project playing at Magic Soundsystem. So far so good but the real stuff is going on at Electropedia Balzaal. Crème de la crème of UK d&b is going to be present. London Elektricity, S.P.Y, Danny Bird and Dj Hype. Balzaal is to be set on fire!
On Friday 13/07 Last Arena is hosting some big hip hop names. To start with Roots Manuva. Social and political hip hop and above all quality music. He will be followed by Mos Def and Talib Kweli who will be playing together for the first time inBelgium.
At Club Cirquit Marquee something different, but not less good. Foreign Beggars can play almost everything but the basis remains grime. He will be followed by Friction upcoming d&b talent and if you are to stay to check out Datsik.
Plenty hip hop at Dour this year. Two excellent bands from Germany are playing at Dance Hall A.S.M is an absolute must see. Hip hop and funk, simple beats but strong presence. Next band on stage is going to be Puppetmastaz. Both of the them are big names in the hip hop scene inGermany.
No Dour without reggae music. This edition is not going to be any different. In Magic Soundsystem the day is going to start quite heavy we can say as Kanka is occupying the stage followed by Twinkle Brothers, roots reggae music to slow down a little bit, than again UK is taking it over for the more heavy stuff with The Dubateers and Reality Shock Soundsystem, the Belgians of Ubuntu Soundsystem have the honor to close the night.
In La Petite Maison de la Prairie two names you definitely shouldn’t miss: Dj Food and if you want to see some crazy turntablism check out Dj Odilon fromBrussels.
On Saturday 14/07 Last Arena is hosting the Bruxellois of Balimurphy who will present their new album, afterwards Andrew Tosh (the son of) to launch some reggae beats. Another act sweet to your ears is Dilated Peoples. Their hip hop is going back to the source.
At Club Cirquit Marquee check out The Pharcyde for more old skool hip hop. Once they are finished, the place to be is Dance Hall were another band from Brussels, Sunrockers, winners of Benelux reggae contest and the best reggae band in Belgium at the moment, will be playing the sweetest roots reggae you have heard in years. Same place Midnite an excellent reggae band fromVirgin Islands. Underline very well this one, all you reggae lovers.
In Magic Soundsystem check out the crazy guy of Dam-Funk and yes we will be present for mister Lefto who has a reputation of spinning hot music.
In Cannibal Stage is going be plenty of d&b so you better stretch in advance. Audio, Counterstrike but main act is definitely Panacea and Limewax. These two are legendary names in d&b.
Electropedia Balzaal is hosting some dubstep producers such as Subscape , Bar9, Killsonik. Young talents which could surprise us. Keep an eye on them. To continue with Doctor P and oh yes on the way check out Flux Pavilion. If you can make it for the last act Funtcase you won’t regret this one.
Sunday 15/07 will be shorter day but for some of the best bands are playing. In the Last Arena two big reggae names, The Abyssinians is one of the best reggae bands of the moment. Tiken Jah Fakoly needs no introduction neither. His concert at Esperanzah previous year was fantastic.
Sunday is reggae day as at Dance Hall you can enjoy Rod Taylor, and also Dub Syndicate a project of three decades by now from one of the best reggae and dub producers Adrian Sherwood. Also the legendary The Skatalites are present in Dour town. Max Romeo one of the most important names of roots reggae will be playing some of his soulful classics.
The line up in Magic Soundsystem is also promising. Another Brussels talent Pablo Andres will be introducing his new album. The last thing to mention is the amazing sets of DJ Kentaro. Looking forward to see him in action. A pleasure for the eyes and also good for your ears. Maybe this is how we could define Dour Festival 2012 edition.
One last thing, already 130.000 tickets sold so you better get your ticket on time.
